A Syrian refugee in Palestine’s Gaza joyfully longs to return home after Assad’s fall

A Syrian refugee recounts their difficult journey of displacement due to war, first fleeing to central areas and then to the south. As the war escalated, news of the atrocities in Syria, particularly from prisons like Sednaya, became overwhelming.
The images from these reports were horrifying and deeply upsetting. The refugee reflects on the painful emotions of seeing their homeland, Syria, in such turmoil, after 13 or 14 years of living there.
They mention the abandonment of basic necessities like food aid and the difficult decision to leave everything behind, including the comfort of home, for the sake of safety. The feeling of "ghorba" (alienation or exile) is described as an inescapable experience, leaving behind everything familiar.
Despite the pain and confusion, the refugee shares a sense of joy and relief, recalling the emotions when they, along with other displaced Syrians, found some form of safety in Gaza. It was a bittersweet moment, marked by both tears of joy and sorrow over the ongoing war.
They express hope for a ceasefire, peace in Gaza, and a return to normalcy, just as Syrian refugees had returned to their homes.
The refugee also mentions their personal journey in Gaza, where they worked in several restaurants and hotels from a young age, eventually opening their own restaurant, which became one of the most successful in the Gaza Strip.
