Subject: One Year, Reflections

There are a few things I've learned over the last year.

The Hijab is a handy tool that can save your life if falling out of a plane, cover that bad hair day and make any woman look absolutely angelic...we'll almost any woman.

A good Quran reciter can calm your soul with the Quran.  A bad reciter can make the words of God sound like a dying cat.

Wudu is the cure for the heat of anger, feeling down about yourself, and that funky foot odor from old sandals.

Most Muslims show a very kind, charitable soul.  They gently call you to Islam and encourage the search for truth.  These are disproportionate to those muslims that call you Kafir and tell you that you're hellfire bound.

Mohammed (pbuh) had 12 wives, including a Christian woman.  His first wife was intelligent, educated and owned her own business.  His youngest was literate, while he was not.

Women are respected in Islam, women are not respected by men of many cultures.  There is a difference.

Jihad is a good thing, Hirabah is a bad thing.

Hypocrites and Apostates are in all religions.  Its not about the group or individual, its about the basics.

Islam is a beautifully simplistic religion that people make harder than it really is.

You will never get two Muslims to agree on everything.

The only thing more confusing than hadiths are fatwas, when in doubt, look at the Quran.

In the end, Islamicity is a wonderfully warm place filled with serious students, kind mothers, reverts, born muslims, christians, one great Jew, and some really funny jokers.

I wish to say thank you to all those that have taught me over the last year.  God Bless everyone of you and keep your families safe from harm.

With Sincere Love,

Angela Marie Daley, that Mormon Girl

What is hirabah? Err I honestly don't know, never heard or read the word myself he he, and I am a muslim by the sound of it.

This is the truest of them all - I am the living proof of it. There is only one agreement I make with fellow muslims - to disagree .

Angela you hit the nail in all those points.

Quote
As part of the ideological "war on terrorism", Muslim scholars are seeking to engage in an ideological battle within Islam to replace the word jihad with a term that labels terrorists as cowardly pirates who kill women and children, which in Islam is the crime of hirabah. Because the word jihad roughly means "religious effort," the West can come off as attacking the daily life of ordinary Muslims, while terrorists get away with wrapping their crimes in religious phraseology. Muslim scholars are meeting in Washington with US officials to change this. "When people carelessly dump on jihad, it has an immediate polarizing effect," said Khaled Abou el Fadl, a professor of Islamic law at UCLA who will attend the meeting. "It may not change much, but it allows Muslims and non-Muslims to say something about terrorists without appearing to malign Islamic theology." "We should use language to move moderates toward the West and quarantine the extremists," added Muqtedar A. Khan, director of international studies at Adrian College.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this past year Angela.  Life certainly is a learning experience isn't it?  I wish I could remember some of what I've learned in this past year, but, I do know that being content with what Allah has given me is the best thing I've ever learned, period.

Peace, ummziba.

Can you elaborate on what you mean to say by this?

I mean I have downloaded several versions of Quran recitation.  My Imam Arafi (Surah Yusuf) is peaceful and relaxing.  However, I cannot remember the reciters name, but his voice was irritating and I was unable to enjoy his recitation because of this.

Reciters are people.  Some have good voices, some have bad.  Just like secular singers.  Sometimes, people just sound more like they are strangling a cat than singing.

Its nothing against Quran recitation itself, just the performers.

Yap you right. What other people say good sometimes its bad to me until I tried everyone of them myself by spending of time in it.

The 2nd link used to work in everyone of them but now few of them don't work, it need patience in clicking. The first one work ok but not that many, enjoy.

So you should not call those reciters of the Qur'an who have bad voices as dying cats. The recitation of the Qur'an is so meritorious. The Qur'an is the word of Allah. It does not matter wether one has a good voice or a bad voice. But it is the recitation of the Qur'an which is more important. Be careful of your comments in future.

Muhammed or should I say Salman,

Loosen up.  I said its not the Quranic recitation, its the voice.  And if they sound like a dying cat, it detracts from the beauty of the Quranic verses they are reciting...if you are going to make a CD for people to buy, you should make sure you can do the subject matter justice and all that it deserves.

Who is this Salman? Why am I being called as Salman in this forum? I have seen another member call me by that name. And I warn you all not to do so in future.

Yes, even I am talking about the voice. If you are listening to a song, and if the voice is not good, then if you wish you can say that it sounds like a dying cat. But when you are listening to the recitation of the Holy Qur'an and if some people have bad voices while reciting it, then you should not call it as the voice of dying cat because they are reciting the word of Allah.

If it sounds like a dying cat, it doesn't matter what they are saying.

And only Salman has ever been so arrogant to "warn" people.  If you're not him, hten you're a newbie, not even a Moderator.

But, I'm pretty sure you are him, since of the 1 year I've been here only one man has been arrogant enough to warn me.

What are you going to do?  You're not a moderator and I've expressed a personal opinion and observation.  I can see the difference between the words and the performance by an individual.  If the voice sounds like a dying cat, it does.  It doesn't matter what they are singing.

Stop calling me Salman. There are so many arrogant people in this world. Will you call all of them Salman? And I am not being arrogant. I just want to correct you.

Again, you are openly insulting the word of Allah ! And I as a Muslim, it is my responsibility to correct you. If one sings a song, and if his voice is bad, then if you wish you can call it as the voice of a dying cat, but when somebody recites the Qur'an and his voice is not good, then you should not call it as the voice of dying cat, as they are reciting the word of Allah ! Be careful of your comments in future.

Be careful or what?  You warn me of what???  I speak my mind.  Deal with it.  I've proven myself here.  You have no right, or power to "warn" me.  You're not my father, husband or brother.  I always tell the truth, even if people don't like it.  If I think it sounds bad, the I will say so.

Brother. please lower your gaze. and refrain from anger. It is not in the way of Islam. You cannot openly accuse her either! You are evidently not american as you do not see as Angela does. She is a good person and has been at this forum for a while. We should  be mindful of the People of the Book and not disrespect them. If you have an issue please PM a moderator. And read the rules of the forum. May Allah (swt) reward you for your stance, but please be mindful that not all here are Muslims. Peace be unto you.

Remember, this is an Islamic forum !

If you wish, you can accept your mistake right here, right now and regret it for making that comment of dying cat.

But if you don't, then I think the moderators should ban you for insulting the word of Allah !

Asalaamu Alaikum:

Brother, it is up to the moderators to correct any error, not us. You are not her mahram and beating  women in the US is not permitted. You approach may not be acceptable to some sensitivities here. If you spoke to me that way, my husband would be VERY quick to set you straight. See the report button in the upper right corner of the screen?  That is how you report something you find offensive. Allah knows best and He understands your intentions.

Mashallah:

Angela, I think I really ought to tell you that I love cats of all shapes and sizes, living and....well, maybe I can't go that far.  I must say that you have deeply upset me by even mentioning poor expiring moggies.  I couldn't sleep at all last night trying to get the vision out of my mind.  I think you should personally apologise to me so that I may sleep in peace.

Oh, Colin, come back....all is forgiven. We so need you here.
