Salaam Alaikum, everyone.
I am a substitute teacher and I guess I could say that as an educator
and a person who was bullied as a kid the movie spoke to me at a deep
level, but I think it is great for anyone to watch. It is a fictional
story of a high school teacher who reached out to a troubled and bullied
kid and helped avert a school shooting, by placing him in a school play
and giving him the chance to express what he was going through.
The movie takes a hard look at bullying in schools, and how it
traumatizes the victims to such an extent that some feel committing a
horrific crime like this is the only way out. It exposes the hypocrisy
of some who will condemn the unjustifiable and evil actions of bullied
kids who have gunned down their classmates, but turn a blind eye to the
bullying that helped drive them to this point. It also shows the
futility of violence, and how the vengeful actions that some take do not
solve the problem.
Watching this film I found interesting, not only because of the issue of
bullying in schools, but also because it reflects some global
realities. Terrorist actions against innocent civilians are always
unjustified and can never be excused on any level. However, often they
are a result of injustices being perpetrated, injustices that are
ongoing and ignored- and that may drive people into the ranks of
extremists.
