Diogenes the Cynic was a Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynic philosophy. Also known as Diogenes of Sinope he was born in Sinope (modern-day Sinop, Turkey) around 412 BCE. Diogenes was a very playful philosopher who had great wit when challenging the values and beliefs of his fellow citizens in ancient Athens. He lived in poverty and had contempt for all forms of luxury.

Following is an example of his cynicism:

A contemporary of Diogenes asked him, "Why is it that pupils leave you to go to other teachers, but rarely do they leave them to come to you?"

Diogenes replied, "Because one can make eunuchs out of men, but no one can make a man out of eunuchs".
