I tried to post this on the literature board, however it would not allow me.
Before I give you the link to the poem, let me explain the story behind it. Many years ago, everyones job was to be a poet, people would write a poem for the king, writing the poem would take 2-3 years. If the king liked the poem, he would give the poet enough gold to last him a few years until they wrote their next poem. After a while, the king changed his mind and said he will not give gold to any poet unless they wrote an origanal piece of poetry. However, the king had to servents a male and a female servent. Whenever the male heard something once, he would have memorized it perfectly. The female servent, after hearing something twice, she would memorize it perfectly. So when poets came to the king, the king would say that the poetry is not new, and he would say even my servent has heard it. By now, the male servent had already heard the poem once, so he memorized it and recited it. Then the king would say, even my female servent knows this poem, and by now she has heard the poem twice and she fully memorized it. Every poet that came was in shock, and left with nothing. After a while, a very famous poet heard about the king, and decided to write a piece of poetry. When he went to the king he dressed himselves in rags so the king would not recognize him. When he went to the king, he recited him poem, then the king would say the same thing, that it is not origanal, and said his servents even knew it. However, neither the male nor female serven could say the extremly difficult poem. The king promised that if anyone can come up with an origanal piece of poetry, he would give them the amount of gold equivalent to what the poet wrote the poem on. The poet wrote the poem on a log, and he emptied the king out of all his money. However, the poet was a god fearing man and told the king to give every poet that has come to him their fair share of gold and to stop deceving his people, so the poet did not get any money, but the others did. This is the link to the poem below, THE POEM: http://www.adb1.com/asma3e.htm THE AUDIO TO THE POEM: http://www.saaid.net/flash/saot.htm It is a very beautiful piece of poetry in my opinion. |
