Dear Daniel, You are absolutely correct. Peace has to come from the common, average individual. There is, quite simply, no other way. Peace be with you always....... |

I got an education today. I went into Haifa to take care of Joey's American
Passport. I was north bound passing the hospital when the sirens went off. We had no time. The ground was lurching with the waves of the first impacts south bound motorists ran toward us caught in the open. we just reached a car dealership when evrything started exploding around us I made Joey lay down between a wall and a pillar and sheilded him the best I could with my own body. A soldier maybe two years older than my son appeared out of nowhere and shielded him the same way from the other side. Yellow Smoke was coming from the hits and police and ambulances were converging from all directions. We ran back to the car I drove three blocks pulled over and we just held each other. I'm still going to the demonstration in Haifa by the Dan Panorama tonight against this war. This is what civilians in Lebenon and Palestine are experiencing every day and worse but when I felt my sons heart beating under me and looked in to the eyes of that young soldier who was willing to use his own body as a shield to help me save my son, I felt defiant and proud that I am a Jew and that I was a soldier in the IDF because folks this is what its about. That and I was also thanking Allah I hadn't wet my pants I respect Islam You are beautiful and neccessary. I do wish we could all just talk about our differences instead of hurting each other. Daniel, I am so glad that you and your son survived that close call. Don't be like so many others and let the emotion of the moment grow hatred inside of you - far too many are letting this happen. And certainly if we could all just talk about our differences as people, one to one, it would be a different world.... Peace, ummziba. |

I also wish that we had soldiers like that... Muslim soldiers, regardless of their color race or country of origin... united in cause... May Allah send us some through our own effort.

Bismillah, We are all very happy that you and Joey are safe. We will pray for your continued good health along with that of the Lebanese and Gazzans. This might seem confusing to some for us to pray for both sides to be safe, but I'm sure that Allah, The All-Knowing can work it out. I pray that all of the weapons malfunction immediately. Hey, it could happen. How do you feel about your statement that I bolded above today? Who do you think should protect the Lebanese people? Israel should stop bombing. America should stop sending new and improved weapons, but who should help the Lebanese after the bombing stops? Maybe Israel for a start. Just a thought. Salaamu Alaykum |

I am glad that I have the right to speak as a former soldier. My words
have more weight. No one can call me a coward. I know that a soldiers job is to put ones self in harms way for civilians all civilians I just got back from the demonstration. The police let a bunch of hoodlums loose on us like dogs. I blocked a few blows let a 200 kilo one armed man rip up my sign that said "Beirut and Haifa want to live" I took my wife and went home. I am proud of that soldier that came to my sons aid earlier today. I'm proud of the soldiers (my students) that pull reserve duty in Palestine and keep the regular army out of mischief. As far as feeling defiant... Well... Feeling defiant is a nice substitution for not wetting ones pants. I was on the verge of total panic today and I had to shake it off. It lasted three blocks. What else you wanna know? Edited by Daniel Dworsky |

How ARE you? There is nothing like a darn good scare to really shake up one's inner solitude. Be sure that you and your son take plenty of opportunity to talk about what happened...don't let it fester inside (though I think you won't, you don't seem that kind ). And, do you think the demonstration made any difference to anybody? Peace, ummziba. |

I think we all have soldiers like that. Soldiers start off and end up (hopefully) as people. :D We just have to keep reminding ourselves of this stubbornly. |
