Narrated Anas
It was said to the Prophet "Would that you see Abdullah bin Ubai." So,the Prophet went to him, riding a donkey, and the Muslims accompanied him, walking on salty barren land. When the Prophet reached 'Abdullah bin Ubai, the latter said, "Keep away from me! By Allah, the bad smellof your donkey has harmed me." On that an Ansari man said (to 'Abdullah), "By Allah! The smell of the donkey of Allah's Apostle is better than your smell." On that a man from 'Abdullah's tribe got angry for 'Abdullah's sake, and the two men abused each other which caused the friends of the two men to get angry, and the two groups started fighting with sticks, shoes and hands. We were informed that the following Divine Verse was revealed (in this concern):-- "And if two groups of Believers fall to fighting then, make peace between them." (49.9) |

Asalaamu Alaikum
2:224 AND DO NOT allow your oaths in the name of God to become an obstacle to virtue and God-consciousness and the promotion of peace between men: <>Asad(2,212) for God is all-hearing, all-knowing 4:86 But when you are greeted with a greeting [of peace], answer with an even better greeting, or [at least] with the like thereof. <>Asad(4,105) Verily, God keeps count indeed of all things. And a reminder to those who have problems and issues with non muslims being in the forum: 4:94 [Hence,] O you who have attained to faith, when you go forth [to war] in God's cause, use your discernment, and do not - out of a desire for the fleeting gains of this worldly life - say unto anyone who offers you the greeting of peace, "Thou art not a believer" <>Asad(4,119) for with God there are gains abundant. You, too, were once in the same condition <>Asad(4,120) - but God has been gracious unto you. Use, therefore, your discernment: verily, God is always aware of what you do. Edited by Maryah |

An excerpt from a song we sing at Mass: "Peace is flowing like a river, flowing down on you and me, flowing out into the desert.....setting all the captives free." Humanity should question itself, once more, about the absurd and always unfair phenomenon of war, on whose stage of death and pain only remain standing the negotiating table that could and should have prevented it. If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. Peace begins with a smile. Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace.
Peace is the only battle worth waging.

Asad: "And when those who believe in Our messages come unto thee, say: "peace be upon you. Your Sustainer has willed upon Himself the law of grace and mercy
Asad(6,46)
- so that if any of you does a bad deed out of ignorance, and thereafter repents and lives righteously, He shall be [found] much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace."

Thanks for sharing these wonderful quotes, Angela. I'd like to add some
"If your understanding of the divine made you kinder, more empathetic, and impelled you to express sympathy in concrete acts of loving-kindness, this was good theology. But if your notion of God made you unkind, belligerent, cruel, of self-righteous, or if it led you to kill in God's name, it was bad theology." -- Karen Armstrong "Respect only has meaning as respect for those with whom I do not agree." -- Karen Armstrong "We can either emphasize those aspects of our traditions, religious or secular, that speak of hatred, exclusion, and suspicion or work with those that stress the interdependence and equality of all human beings. The choice is yours."
-- Karen Armstrong
"The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect." -- Karen Armstrong |

Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people--Eleanor Roosevelt |
