Assalamu Alaikum:

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

The wife of Thabit bin Qais came to the Prophet and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I do not blame Thabit for defects in his character or his religion, but I, being a Muslim, dislike to behave in un-Islamic manner (if I remain with him)." On that Allah's Apostle said (to her), "Will you give back the garden which your husband has given you (as Mahr)?" She said, "Yes." Then the Prophet said to Thabit, "O Thabit! Accept your garden, and divorce her once."

In this Hadith, the wife of Thabit did not love him. She feared that because of this, she may start to dislike him or behave towards him in an unIslamic manner. If you are forced to be with someone you do not love, you may start to resent them or hate them and your behavior would reflect this. Rather than stay with him and expose herself to the sins of this behavior, she asked for the divorce.

Islamically, you can divorce for any reason. While divorce is not encouraged, and should be used as a last resort, the Quran states:

2:229 A divorce is only permissible twice: after that, the parties should either hold Together on equitable terms, or separate with kindness. It is not lawful for you, (Men), to take back any of your gifts (from your wives), except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah. If ye (judges) do indeed fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah, there is no blame on either of them if she give something for her freedom. These are the limits ordained by Allah. so do not transgress them if any do transgress the limits ordained by Allah, such persons wrong (Themselves as well as others).

No one can be forced to remain in a marriage. However, women who are pregnant must remain in iddat until the child is born:

65:4 Such of your women as have passed the age of monthly courses, for them the prescribed period, if ye have any doubts, is three months, and for those who have no courses (it is the same): for those who carry (life within their wombs), their period is until they deliver their burdens: and for those who fear Allah, He will make their path easy.

It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, what is essential is invisible to the eye. (The Little Prince)

Assalamu Alaikum:

I have never read that the companions were so full of Iman that they would divorce their wives if they did something wrong.

That doesn't mean that it is not written somewhere, or it didn't happen, I am just not aware of that being given as a reason for divorce by the Sahaba. I would think that if it were something that occured a lot there would be many records of it, or the Prophet would have addressed the issue.

I would think, as they were the closest to the Prophet(PBUH), that if anyone were doing something wrong they would have tried to correct the behavior. That was the way of the Prophet(PBUH). Also, Islam took 23 years to be perfected. During this time people were learning and adapting, some faster than others. I am sure they were all making mistakes and then being corrected. The only way I can see the drastic measure of a divorce based on haram actions is if it was a matter that was firmly established, been made very public, and the woman kept repeating the action. (I assume we're not talking adultery here because the punishment would have been other than divorce.) In such a case where someone continued to disobey Allah(SWT) over and over then it might have led to divorce, but I think it would be something that was well known, so that we could learn a lesson from it.

Perhaps someone else knows better than I, or has actual documentation of a divorce of this nature.

It is only with the heart that one can see clearly, what is essential is invisible to the eye. (The Little Prince)

Is there a reason why you cannot go over page 2 and 3

It'll save me from repeating myself

Mishmish,
