Salaams. Can you tell me your thoughts on a muslim child having both the mother and father's last names? The parents are divorced. Is having a hyphenated last name with the father's last name ( non muslim name ) hypen mother's last name ( muslim last name) haraam? The child is following the muslim religion like his mother. Thank you for your help.

Salam
In Islam the only requirement about name is, doesn't have bad meaning. Also we don't want to name our baby with the known enemy of Islam such as abu jahal, abu lahab, pharoh etc. Other than that, any nams should be fine, not should be sounded middle eastern or arabic. So John, james, nancy, samantha, baker, jesus, moses, etc is totally acceptable.

Salaams,
Thank you for your reply. So regarding a last name about the child, I came accross many articles in my research about specifically giving the child the last name of the father. Can you tell me anything on this? Thanks

Giving father last name is just a cultural things. It's not "religion matter", so you follow it or not, will not affect your "piousness". In many places, one of them in Indonesia, they don't have concept of family name, let say a family have 4 children, the children don't have the same last name, their last name nothing to do with their mom's or dad's. Moreover, many of them (Indonesian) only have one name, so they don't have last name, for example the first and the second president of Indonesia Suakarno and Suharto. As you know Indonesia is the largest muslim country on earth. Again last name is a culture things, not a religous things.

When a matter has a ruling from sharia, personal opinions shouldnt really be asked.
Having a name other then a fathers name is a big sin in Islam, Islam is very strict when it comes to lineage and these r not matters or personal opinions but facts.
A person wanting a different name then that of his father and family should be ashamed of him/herself.
A convert is sure allowed to change his own name to a muslim name only.
Once many muslim families and tribes where non muslim, however when they converted those same family names were then regarded as muslim family names.
