I live in this area and paid close attention to the reporting.

Shaykh Hamza Yousef is correct. Mateen was a nominal Muslim at best. Interviews revealed Mateen's father often upbraided him about his drinking and non-Islamic behavior.

Shaykh Yasir Quadhi is incorrect. Mateen had no history of mental illness and was not a "lone wolf". He was the employee of an American company which contracts mercenaries. Eyewitnesses reported the shooting was done by a team of 3-5. Not a lone wolf.

Mateen had purchased airplane tickets for himself and his family for the day after the shooting, so he expected to escape alive. Not a madman.

Little evidence that Mateen was bisexual. No authenticated homosexual liaisons. The fact that he was reported to be edgy and uncomfortable when at Pulse would better describe a straight undercover agent in an uncomfortable environment. He did spend time at Pulse and used his cell phone which had a single (not multiple) gay contact on it. Mateen and his wife spent time researching the area around Pulse together, which does not sound gay at all.

My opinion that Mateen was a straight, American mercenary who covertly researched the venue well ahead of the shooting. Who paid for his hire is a matter of speculation.

The worst mass shooting in modern day America was recently carried out by a Muslim named Omar Mateen. Because he was a Muslim, the media stereotypically made sure there was no mention of him being a loner or being crazy or having mental health problems, despite the fact that he clearly had many unresolved skeletons in his closet (divorce, confused sexuality, steroid use, domestic abuse, drinking alcohol, and the rest). Instead, predictably, the ISIS-Islam-Muslim immigration triumvirate was pushed to the forefront, with the phrase self-radicalised being heard often on various news channels.

From the atheist perspective this is the trouble with all religions;

Take a flakey confused person, add a load of guilt trips about his own life that he cannot help or avoid, in this case sexuality and the confusion over his lack of belief in a religion he wanted to believe in, then have a visual image gallery of religiously inspired violence ending in almost certain death and suddenly a warped version of suicide with respectability appears.

If you think for yourself about everything you are generally not going to be so exploitable.
