Bi ismillahir rahmanir raheem

assalamu alaikum Habib

i am not a scholar br but from what little i understand it means that when you move towards allah by improving your self and riding your self of the bad qualities you have and replacing them with good qualities you make mistakes along this path as we all do, if you feel discouraged or you do not want to improve your self anylonger then your faith or hope is in the deeds that you do rather than allah.

The true meaning is deeper than what I have said but in essance the scholar is saying look towards allah and place your faith in him rather than what you do.

i am sorry for the late reply i only just saw this
Rasul Allah (sallah llahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Whoever knows himself, knows his Lord" and whoever knows his Lord has been given His gnosis and nearness.
