In Matthew 27:55-56 it says that many women were "watching from a distance", and specifically names "Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons." In Mark it says Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome were witnesses. In the Gospel of Luke it mention of Jesus' followers is in Luke 23:49, which says that some of them watched from a distance. In the Gospel of John it says that several women and one disciple stood "near the cross", and that Jesus spoke to them from the cross. The women are identified as Jesus' mother Mary, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clophas (or Cleophas), and Mary Magdalene. The disciple is identified only as "the disciple whom Jesus loved". The unnamed disciple mentioned in John is often called the "Beloved Disciple". He has traditionally been identified as John the son of Zebedee, one of the original twelve disciples, and the author of the gospel. |

A dozen disciples, a thousand mobsters screaming.
Watching your leader die would not be the most fun you've had in a while, plus the chances you'd get stoned, or torn limb from limb is always a possibility, but not a good way to live the rest of your, (trmendously shortened) life. Looks like John had the nerve to get up close, but after the mob died down some. Others would watch from afar. Some, I'm sure found a house to hole up in until things quietened down. Where would Mahdi the seeker be? |

Is it implied in your question that Jesus died and did not come alive again? It is important to know what happened when he "died". The curtains of the temple split- this is symbolic of the people. Some denied Jesus, some went with him. And only in Matthew do we read that some of the dead arose. Matthew ch 27-
The Death of JesusAZ)'>45 From noon until three in the afternoon darknessBA)'> came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eli, Eli,c]'>[c] lema sabachthani? (which means My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?).d]'>[d]BB)'> 47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, Hes calling Elijah. 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,BC)'> put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, Now leave him alone. Lets see if Elijah comes to save him. 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.BD)'> 51 At that moment the curtain of the templeBE)'> was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks splitBF)'> 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus resurrection ande]'>[e] went into the holy cityBG)'> and appeared to many people. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guardingBH)'> Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, Surely he was the Son of God!BI)'> 55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.BJ)'> 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,f]'>[f] and the mother of Zebedees sons. Reading on, so much more happened - Jesus appearing, walking through the wall, etc. and final teachings to the disciples. |
