A friend of mine wrote this on his blog and I thought it worth sharing here.
"I really don't mind debate, as long as the exchange is amicable and respectful. Once is becomes clear that ones premises are not being considered or debated, but that name-calling and irrational statements begin, the debate is no longer a debate but a brawl.
...And, it is irrational to expect to "win" every debate. That doesn't mean your premise has been disproved, but that you have failed to convince the other party. As I often say, " a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." (I don't know the author of that quote.)" |
