Dr maurice bucaille in his book "the bible the quran and science" says kaukab means planet that does not have its own light......i find his analysis correct, infact a village in israel is named kaukab and the villagers say it means planet......however generally quran translations have kaukab translated as "star"
however the term for star in Quran is "najm"
ofcourse najm and kaykab are two different things.....
would like to have opinion of people who have researched on it.
The whole world is like Hazrat Umar but no one is like his sister and brother in law.

Most of the time I agree it is understood as planets. But there was once, I can't remember where that it seems like stars to me. If you can point that to me I be grateful saving me from searching and searching.

So here is where the confusion dwells. So which one you like to chose?
Chapter 82:2

Shabbir Ahmed:    When the planets are dispersed
Sahih International:   And when the stars fall, scattering,
Muhsin Khan:              And when the stars have fallen and scattered;
Pickthall:                      When the planets are dispersed,
Yusuf Ali:                      When the Stars are scattered;
Shakir:                           And when the stars become dispersed,
Dr. Ghali:                      And when the planets will be strewn,
Rashad Khalifa:           The planets are scattered
