Assalaam Alaikum,
Marriage between a Muslim woman and Christian or Jewish man are muddy waters and the debate is ongoing but I am not posting this for the feminists among us... One set of people say it is permissible for Men And Women to marry chaste people of the book; their argument rests on the principle that since it is not explicitly prohibited for women, the rule applies to both men and women. The other set, including many sahaba explicitly forbade muslim women from marrying non-muslim men. Their arguments are that since it is explicitly allowed for men and women are not mentioned, it is not allowed for women. There are also mostly practical reasons such as non-believer head of the household, her difficulty in following her faith, etc. What is the ruling for unchaste muslim women or muslim women who have made some mistakes and are afraid that they are spoiled goods as far as muslim men are concerned... what do you think? |

Actually, its not a debate at all. It is a very clear matter and understood by 98% of the Muslims and all scholars. It is as clear as the prohibition for alcohol, pork, or adultery for that matter. The only 'debate' that is going on is amongst secular circles...
Only a handful of people (people, not scholars) think that it is permissible for women to marry non-muslim men. With all due respect, those beliefs can be termed personal opinions and are not based on Islamic Knowledge or Qur''an or Prophetic Tradition. It actually is explicitly forbidden for women to marry non-muslim men and for men to marry polythiestic women.
This 'other set' is basically the vast majority of modern-day Muslims and Scholars, including the Sahabah. Infact it is mentioned in the Qur'an too.
The statement ''and are afraid that they are spoiled goods as far as muslim men are concerned..'' is deeply problematic and reflects not only cultural effects of male chauvinism, but lack of Islamic knowledge on behalf of such women. The reason muslim women (and men) remain chaste is for God... not so that they can be prized individuals for marriage. Also, Chastity has nothing to do with virginity. A non-virgin divorcee or widow can be just as chaste as a virgin Muslim. Chastity is how you conduct yourself as a Muslim and how your interact with the opposite gender. Even if a person commited a mistake and lost their chastity - the doors to forgiveness are ever-open and they should not be hesitant to seek forgiveness, repent and be chaste from that point onwards, never looking back. Even if a Muslim woman made a mistake - she should not think she is not worth muslim men, rather she should look at her worth in front of Allah. Once she has redeemed her worth in Islam, (in front of God) by SINCERELY repenting and never turning back, she can marry muslim men. Both muslim men and women are not obliged to open up their past mistakes to their future spouses. Once they have repented, they can marry amongst muslims. This is no reason nor excuse to marry non-muslims... [/QUOTE] Edited by Chrysalis - 06 June 2012 at 6:48pm |
