Alphonse de LaMartaine in 'Historie de la Turquie� said

"If greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astonishing results are the three criteria of a human genius, who could dare compare any great man in history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws, and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. This man moved not only armies, legislations, empires, peoples, dynasties, but millions of men in one-third of the then inhabited world; and more than that, he moved the altars, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and the souls.

" The idea of the unity of God, proclaimed amidst the exhaustion of the fabulous theogonies, was in itself such a miracle that upon it's utterance from his lips it destroyed all the ancient temples of idols and set on fire one-third of the world. His life, his meditations, his heroic revelings against the superstitions of his country, and his boldness in defying the furies of idolatry, his firmness in enduring them for fifteen years in Mecca, his acceptance of the role of public scorn and almost of being a victim of his fellow countrymen: all these and finally, his flight, his incessant preaching, his wars against odds, his faith in his success and his superhuman security in misfortune, his forbearance in victory, his ambition, which was entirely devoted to one idea and in no manner striving for an empire; his endless prayers, his mystic conversations with God, his death and his triumph after death; all these attest not to an imposture but to a firm conviction which gave him the power to restore a dogma. This dogma was twofold the unity of God and the immateriality of God: the former telling what God is, the latter telling what God is not...

"Philosopher, Orator, Apostle, Legislator, Conqueror of Ideas, Restorer of Rational beliefs.... the founder of twenty terrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire that is Muhammad. As regards all standards by which human greatness may be measured, we may well ask, is there any man greater than he?" �

Researchers, thinkers and writers -- his admirers as well as his detractors�have often argues that Muhammad (SAW) was a genius. He was a genius, they say, because he �authored� a book that became the most revolutionary and most powerful book of the world, as this book within a span of a few decades galvanized illiterate, corrupt, polytheistic Arabs into world leaders in every field of social existence. The enemies even claim that in �authoring� Quran he borrowed most of his ideas from Christian sources, studying the whole of which would in itself be a work of no ordinary mortal. To many thinkers, he was a genius because he showed the quality of a leader that was never shown in the world before; no person other than him could achieve such remarkable successes as he could. He was a genius, others argue, because he showed incomparable skills as a general and introduced such new strategies in the warfare as were never recorded in history before; his severest detractors in fact take huge pains to give credit to his military genius for the successes his achieved. He was a genius, theologists claim, because he could produce a monotheistic model of religion that proved to be far more attractive than the religious models that were available to the people before his time. His genius, the sociologists argue, was able to mould divided, disgruntled and debauched natives of Arabian lands into a unit of discipline, dedication and devotion; he created a social structure that had justice, equality, brotherhood, faith in one God, One Prophet, One Book and One Ka�ba as the uniting symbols, a social structure that gave the slaves, women and the other deprived classes reasons to wholeheartedly embrace the �new religion�. He was a genius, economists assert � recent global economic crisis strengthened this belief, because he had marvellous ideas about running an economy successfully without resorting to rely on dangerous practices like usury, and without letting evils like gambling, alcohol and sex getting commercialized. Political experts have called him a political genius as he was able to transform into an unchallenged political leader, using all the tools of successful politicking in the process � vows of allegiance, treaties, alliances, protests, sieges and wars. Moral scientists can also argue that he was a genius because despite the huge political and social issues involved, morality remained at the top of his agenda, and he could develop an impeccable code of conduct spelling dos and don�ts of behaviour in their finest details. If Muhammad (SAW) was a Supergenius composed of such a huge variety of geniuses, he simply could not be a mortal genius; he was surely a Divine Genius � Divine in the sense that he had Divine Support-- who was the Best Product of the Creation with the Most Developed Brain of all times, a brain that could receive transmissions from God the creator and could successfully carry out the commands and implement the plans that they carried with them. If we try to pinpoint one ultimate purpose the whole comprehensiveness of his Project had it was perhaps the protection of life � both in the world and the Hereafter, the most essential part of the Project being the development of a proper relationship between Life and Life-Giver without which life could not have been protected and secured. In fact it was not merely the protection of life from the external and internal threats but also the perfection of life through a divine channel that supplied it with all that it needed for its final aim.



If Muhammad (SAW) was a Supergenius composed of such a huge variety of geniuses, he simply could not be a mortal genius; he was surely a Divine Genius who was the Best Product of the Creation with the Most Developed Brain of all times, a brain that could receive transmissions from God the creator and could successfully carry out the commands and implement the plans that they carried with them. If we try to pinpoint one ultimate purpose the whole comprehensiveness of his Project had it was perhaps the protection of life � both in the world and the Hereafter, the most essential part of the Project being the development of a proper relationship between Life and Life-Giver without which life could not have been protected and secured. In fact it was not merely the protection of life from the external and internal threats but also the perfection of life through a divine channel that supplied it with all that it needed for its final aim.

Life is not just the physical life; it has moral, spiritual and social components. Life is also not related to this world; its Second Birth will be in a New World totally different from the present one. Muhammad (SAW) protected all these components of life ensuring not only its longevity but its peacefulness. Here however I would limit this discussion to the physical part of the life in this world. The System Muhammad presided over not only respects life but safeguards it from all forms of threats. These threats include not just the ones from harmful foods, drinks and practices but also the human threats to humans.



Muhammad (SAW) was neither the first nor somewhere in the middle of the chain of prophets. He was the Final Prophet, and the System he created under the Guidance of God has a stamp of finality in all its aspects. He perfected a life protective system that protected individuals, family and society. In the process of establishing it, he created a unique system comprising Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and Fundamental Prohibitions; this three-dimensional system created favourable conditions not only for the survival of life, but also for its longevity and quality. On the Divine Mission as he was, he did not leave it for the posterity to implement the system; he successfully initiated the implementation himself by not just advising his followers to give up health-damaging practices and adopt health-enhancing ones but also by erecting a legal framework that would make the system itself health-protective. For example, he did not just ask individuals to refrain from harmful practices like alcohol, gambling and sexual misdemeanours but also banned all the commercial and social uses of these practices. The individuals who threatened the lives of human beings for their own ends did not deserve any mercy from the law and attracted punishments, the severity of punishments corresponding to the seriousness of their crimes. If their misdemeanours threatened the lives of the people; they would even face death. The lives of the minority can be taken to save the lives of the majority rather than saving the lives of the minority risking the lives of the majority. The murders, the rapists, the adulterers had no right to sympathy, as they threatened the lives of fellow human beings.

Muhammad SAW successfully implemented Prohibition, something that no other leader or system could achieve before or after him, except of course his followers. The followers of Jesus could not even agree on whether wine is desirable or undesirable. No other religion could enforce prohibition even if some of them showed clear disapproval. According to a hadith,

�When the prohibition of wine (was yet to be) declared, Umar said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. So the following verse of Surat al-Baqarah revealed; "They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin...." Umar was then called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. Then the following verse of Surat an-Nisa' was revealed: "O ye who believe! approach not prayers with a mind befogged.... " Thereafter the herald of the Apostle of Allah would call when the (congregational) prayer was performed: Beware, one who is drunk should not come to prayer. Umar was again called and it was recited to him. He said: O Allah, give us a satisfactory explanation about wine. This verse was revealed: "Will ye not then abstain?" Umar said: We abstained. (Hadith - Abu Dawood, Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab RA)

The same is true of enforcement of laws related to gambling and sex. He showed to the world that State has a role to play in protecting the lives of the people; citizens of a state cannot be charged alone with the responsibility of protecting themselves. The ordinary people cannot be left to the mercy of the cunning that seek to misguide and lure them for their selfish ends. The whole machinery of the state including Law, Executive and Media must be employed to help the masses in protecting themselves from dangerous practices. The state is duty bound to eliminate not only the dangers to life but human hands and brains that create the dangers. One additional task of the state is to protect its citizens from wars and civil wars. To prepare for defeating back the aggressors, to campaign against the loss of lives caused by tyrants, terrorists, merchants of death, organized criminal gangs in all possible ways � military and nonmilitary, are all the functions of the state which Muhammad (SAW) successfully demonstrated when he became head of the nascent Islamic state. He fought wars when there was no other option left but preferred to use peaceful methods for achieving the ultimate peace. Saving the life was obviously the most important consideration in arriving at the decision.

How much protection Muhammad gave to life is clear from the fact that even now if Muhammad (SAW) is accepted as the Ultimate Guide of humanity, every year more than 80 million lives can be saved. These include



�        2 million murders

�        2.2 million suicides

�        5 million deaths from AIDS

�        5 million deaths from smoking

�        2 million deaths associated with alcohol

�        2 million deaths associated with gambling and drugs

�        70 million cases of feticide.



80 million is no small numbers. And I have proved in my paper on life expectancy that applying Islam would mean a remarkable increase in life expectancy. Alcohol decreases life expectancy by about 10 years, gambling by about 10, promiscuity by about 15 and homosexuality by about 25 years. Pork too, directly (pork related diseases) or indirectly (pigs related diseases like Swine flu), can cause a big loss of lives. On the other hand, breastfeeding for 2 years (promoted by Quran and the Prophet) increases life expectancy by more than 10 years and circumcision more than 15 years. The practice of Iddah (Minimum waiting period between two marriages of the same woman), the miswak (brushing teeth preferably by natural botanical brushes), the use of honey, kalaunji (both immensely liked by Prophet SAW), regular prayers, games involving physical exercises (also liked by Prophet) are all capable of significantly increasing life expectancies.



I wish the world adopted aggressive life protective policies of Muhammad, the greatest protector of life the world has ever produced.

All i see in this post is the blind idolization of the prophet.Muhammad was a mere human being who was blessed with Prophethood and the  final scripture from GOD.The word of GOD Quran ,the final message to humanity is the real genius.Muhammad became a great leader only becoz he followed the commandments of his Lord in the Quran.Muhammad was not infalliable as many believe.This is proven in the below verse from the Quran.
[66:1] O you prophet, why do you prohibit what GOD has made lawful for you, just to please your wives? GOD is Forgiver, Merciful.*

*66:1 Mohammedans around the world believe that Muhammad was infallible. This verse teaches us that he was indeed a fallible human being (18:110, 33:37, 40:66, 80:1).

Hope you read above lines with attention. I don't think there is any exaggeration of our Prophet. Nor do i see that it was expressed anywhere that Prophet was not infallible.

Here's the commentary am sharing : {I wish you to read its context}
 
(75:16) (O Prophet), *11 do not stir your tongue hastily (to commit the Revelation to memory).
 
*11 The whole passage from here to "Again, it is for Us to explain its meaning", is a parenthesis, which has been interposed here as an address to the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace). As we have explained in the Introduction above, in the initial stage of the Prophethood when the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) was not yet fully used to receiving the Revelation, he was afraid when Revelation came down to him whether he would be able to remember exactly what the Angel Gabriel (peace be on him) was reciting to him or not. Therefore, he would try to commit to memory rapidly what he heard from the Angel simultaneously. The same thing happened when Gabriel was reciting these verses of Surah AI-Qiyamah. Therefore, interrupting what was being revealed, the holy Prophet was instructed to the effect: "Do not try to memorise the words of the revelation, but listen to it attentively and carefully. It is Our responsibility to enable you to remember it by heart and then to recite it accurately. Rest assured that you will not forget even a word of this Revelation, nor ever commit a mistake in reciting it! 

After this instruction the original theme is resumed with "No, by no means! The fact is . . . " The people who are not aware of this background regard these sentences as wholly .unconnected with the context when they see them interposed here. But one does not see any irrelevance when one has understood their background. This can be understood by an example. A teacher seeing the inattentiveness of a student in the course of the lesson might interrupt the lesson to tell him, "Listen to me carefully", and then resume his speech, This sentence will certainly seem to be irrelevant to those who might be unaware of the incident and might read the lesson when it is printed and published word for word, But the one who is aware of the incident because of which this sentence was interposed, will feel satisfied that the lesson has been reproduced verbatum and nothing has been increased or decreased in it in the process of reproduction. 

The explanation that we have given above of the interpolation of the parenthesis in the present context, is not merely based .on conjecture, but it has been explained likewise in the authentic traditions. Imam Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Tirmidhi Ibn Jarir, Tabarani, Baihaqi and other traditionists have related with authentic chains of transmitters a tradition from Hadrat `Abdullah bin `Abbas, saying that when the Qur'an was revealed to the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace), he would start repeating the words of the Revelation rapidly as the Angel Gabriel recited them, fearing lest he should forget some part of it later. Thereupon, he was instructed: "Do not move your tongue to remember this Revelation hastily ... The same thing has been related from Sha`bi, Ibn Zaid, Dahhak, Hasan Basri, Qatadah, Mujahid and other early commentators

*13 This gives the feeling, and some early commentators also have given expression to the same, that probably in the beginning the Holy Messenger of Allah used to ask of the Angel Gabriel the meaning of a verse or a word or a command of the Qur'an even in the very midst of the Revelation itself. Therefore, the Holy Prophet was not only given the instruction that he should listen quietly to Revelation when it carne down to him, and assured that its each word would be preserved in his memory precisely, and he would be enabled to recite the Qur'an exactly as it was revealed, but at the same time it was also promised that he would be made to understand the meaning and intention of each command and each instruction of Divine Revelation. 

This is a very important verse, which proves certain fundamental concepts which if understood well, can protect one against the errors which some people have been spreading before as they are spreading them today. 

First, it clearly proves that the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) did not receive only the Revelation which is recorded in the Qur'an but besides that he was also given such knowledge by revelation as is not recorded in it. For, if the meaning and intention of the commandments of the Qur'an, its allusions, its words and its specific terms, which the Holy Prophet was made to understand, had been recorded in the Qur'an, there was no need to say that it was also Allah's own responsibility to explain its meaning, for it should then be there in the Qur'an itself. Hence, one will have to admit that the explanations which were given by Allah of the meanings of the contents of the Qur'an, were in any case in addition to the words of the Qur'an. This is another proof of the secret Revelation to the Holy Prophet which the Qur'an provides. (For further proofs of this from the Qur'an, see our book Sunnat ki A ni Haithiyat pp. 94-95 and pp. 118-125). 

Secondly, the explanation of the meaning and intention of the Qur'an and of its commandments that was given by Allah to the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace), was given for the purpose that he should make the people understand the Qur'an by his word and deed according to it and teach them to act on its Commands. If this was not the object, and the explanation was only given so that he may restrict its knowledge to himself, it was then an exercise in futility, for it could not help in any way in the performance of the prophetic duties. Therefore, only a foolish person could say that this explanatory work had no legal value at all. Allah Himself has said in Surah An-Nahl: 44: "And O Prophet, We have sent down this Admonition to you so that you may make plain and explain to the people the teaching which has been sent for them." (For explanation, see E.N. 40 of Surah An-Nahl). And at four places in the Qur'an Allah has stated that the Holy Prophet's task was not only to recite the verses of the Book of Allah but also to teach the Book. (Al-Baqarah: 129,.151, Al-Imran: 164, Al-Jumu`ah: 2. We have fully explained all these verses at pp. 74-77 of Sunnat ki A'ini Haithiyat After this, how can a believer of the Qur'an deny that the Qur'an's correct and authoritative, as a matter of fact official, explanation is only that which the Holy Prophet (upon whom be peace) has given by his word and deed, for it is not his personal explanation but the explanation given by the God Who sent down the Qur'an to him.
 
Apart from this, or leaving this aside any person who explains a verse, or a word, of the Qur'an according to his personal whim and desire, commits a boldness which no true believer could ever commit. 

Thirdly, even if a person has read the Qur'an only cursorily, he cannot help feeling that there are many things in it whose actual meaning and intention cannot be understood by a reader of Arabic only from the words of the Qur'an, nor can he know how to act on the commands enjoined in them. Take the word salat for instance; The act which has been most stressed by the Qur'an after the affirmation of faith is the act of salat. But no man only with the help of the dictionary can determine its actual meaning. At the most what one can understand from the way it has been repeatedly mentioned in the Qur'an is that this Arabic word has been used in some special terminological sense, and it probably implies some special act which the believers are required to perform. But merely by reading the Qur'an no reader of Arabic can determine what particular act it is, and how it is to be performed. The question: If the Sender of the Qur'an had not appointed a teacher from Himself and explained to him the precise and exact meaning of this term and taught him the method in full detail of implementing the command of salat, could there be even two Muslims in the world who would have agreed on one method of acting on the command of salat just by reading the Qur'an? The reason why Muslims have been performing salat in one and the same way, generation after generation, for more than 1500 years, and the way millions and millions of Muslims are carrying out the command of salat similarly in every part of the world, is that AIlah had not only revealed the words of the Qur'an to His Messenger but had also explained to him fully the meaning of those words and the same meaning he taught to the people who accepted the Qur'an as the Book of Allah and him as the Messenger of Allah. 

Fourthly, the means of knowing the explanation of the words of the Qur'an that Allah taught His Messenger and the Messenger his Ummah by word and deed, is none but the Hadith and the Sunnah, The Hadith implies the traditions which the earliest followers passed on to the later generations about the sayings and acts of the Messenger on sound authority, and the Sunnah implies the way of life which became prevalent in the individual and collective life of the Muslims by the Holy Messenger's oral and practical teaching, the details of which have been bequeathed by the former to the latter generations by reliable traditions as well as seen .by them practically in the life of the earliest followers. The person who refuses to acknowledge this means of knowledge, in fact, says that Allah after taking the responsibility of explaining the meaning of the Qur'an to His Messenger had, God forbid, failed to fulfil His promise. For this responsibility had not been taken to explain the meaning only to the Messenger in his personal capacity but for the purpose that the Ummah also be made to understand the meaning of the Divine Book through the agency of the Messenger. And as soon as the Hadith and the Sunnah are denied to be a source of law, it virtually amounts to saying that Allah has failed to carry out His responsibility. May Allah protect us froth such blasphemy! To the one who argues that many people had also fabricated Hadid, we would say that fabrication of Hadid itself is a major proof of the fact that in the beginning the entire Ummah gave the sayings and acts of the Holy Messenger (Upon whom be Allah's peace) the status of law, otherwise why should the people who wanted to spread error have fabricated false ,Hadith. For only those coins are counterfeited which are current in the bazaar; nobody would print paper currency which had no value in the bazaar. Then, those who say such a thing perhaps do not know that this Ummah had seen to it from the very beginning that no falsehood was ascribed to the holy man whose sayings and acts had the status of law, and as the danger of ascribing false things to him increased, the well-wishers of the Ummah made greater and still greater efforts tt) distinguish the genuine from the counterfeit. The science of distinguishing the genuine from the false traditions is a unique science invented and developed only by the Muslims. Unfortunate indeed are those who without acquiring this science are being misled by the western orientalists to look upon the Hadith and the Sunnah as un-authentic and un-reliable and do not realize how grievously they are harming Islam by their foolhardiness. 
 
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: �All the descendants of Adam are sinners, and the best of sinners are those who repent."
