I am new to this board, and I would like some information on obtaining a divorce.

I married a sh*te muslim man over three years ago.I am Canadian and my Husband was living in Canada too on refugee status. We married at registra office. After 4 months together he was deported back to his Country..never to come back again to Canada.

I have tried to contact him, and he has replied..but when my LAwyer sent him divorce papers by fax, he ignored them.

The question I want to ask is..is there a mosque or learned man such as Iman..that could help me..get the papers to him..as this might help me to obtain a signature..by the way my Husband now lives in Riyadh Saudi Arabia..

I am living in VAncouver BC Canada..if this is of any help..

Thanks ahead of time for all who would like to steer me in the right direction

Assalamu alaikum,

I am so sorry to hear this has happened to you.  You are not alone.  Many western women have been tricked into marriage by men who are only after citizenship, then they take off.

I wish I could be of more help, but all I can offer are two good websites where you might be able to find some help or direction.  I hope this is of some help.

www.karamah.org (Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights)

www.wluml.org (Women Living Under Muslim Laws)

Also, I am not positive, but I believe that abandonment for a certain length of time would get you a divorce by Canadian law, without his signature.  Check and see if this is so.

Peace, ummziba.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but your words...they break my soul ~

first of all never marry a muslim! it is the biggest mistake u cn make! i was in the same situation, i married a gay muslim guy from pakistan(smelly) so he could stay in the country i thought our relationship was real, as soon as he got citizenship, he undid his circumsision(plastic surgery-dont ask) and went of wiv prozzies, i felt used! i myself am a bisexual muslim!, you are very unfortunate, i know a solicitor that can help you, it is immiration, but he will give advice on immigrants marrying and divorcing-in my opinion they shouyld make a law-only marry a person who has citizenship in that country. The solicitopr is based in the UK, but he has branches around the world and one in Vancouver:

Suite 1700
Telephone: 604.688.1301
1075 West Georgia Street
Fax: 604.688.8193
Vancouver, British Columbia V6E 3C9

i hope this will help, he is a specialist in this case, and i am sure he has a branch in Saudi-Arabia.

Good Luck!

I don't know how it works in Canada, but a similar situation happened to my Aunt in Washington, DC.  She married a Phillipino man and found out later that not only had he only been after his green card, but that his supposedly deceased spouse in the Phillipines was alive and still married to him.  She was able to get an annullment based on the fact that he entered the marriage for illegal purposes.  I know that doesn't help you very much.  My heart goes out to you.  The other suggestion is to contact the Canadian Embassy in Saudi Arabia (if there is one)  or the Saudi Embassy in Ottawa (if there is one.)
