JABARA: Sleep Walking, Straight To Hell
May 28, 2005
By Albert M. Jabara

What happens when leaders sell their dignity, honor and the land their ancestors built and bled for? What happens to thinkers and writers when they think without their conscience?

Arab leaders and the majority of the upper class, even though this class represents less than 10% of any respective population of any country in the Middle East, including 99.9% of recognized writers, journalists and thinkers are all clinically living alright; spiritually they are dead as a rock. Repeated reaction similar to recent events in The Middle East by this small and wealthy percentage of the population have betrayed the Region for the least several hundred years since the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Of course, the West recognized the weakness and vulnerability of this small group and applied on them every conceivable black mail invented since the beginning of the human existence. Black mail tactics, soon became a school of thought for this small group. Eventually they became Western bodies, scattered all over the Middle East.

300-million Arabs are so intrigued with the Western culture they have little regard to the cradle that housed them when they were babies. For them naked bodies, free sex and Hollywood are the fashions they prefer to run after and do not bother with Islamic rules and laws. What is pathetic about this hysteria is most Americans are actually disgusted with what America turned into. This tells us Arabs are not in love with American culture in a true sense, but are afraid to make a full commitment to Islam.

History will one day register true facts about Islam and Arabs. Arabs will continue to fall behind; Islam, on the other hand, will be embraced by Westerners and North Americans in numbers beyond anyones wildest dreams. This brings us back to the famous argument. Islam is not an Arabic religion; it is a religion for all mankind, very much like Christianity. The Holy Quran was sent to mankind in Arabic not as an indication Islam was an Arabic religion. Arabia at that time had the worse human right abuse on the planet. Naturally, Arabia was Gods choice to steer to the right path first. Arabic is the language of Heaven; it cannot be claimed as the language of Arabs, but the language of all mankind in hereafter life.

Islam does not have problems with the Christian Church; it has problems with fanatics like George W. Bush who claims he speaks with God. With exception to Moses, no other prophets dared to claim they had spoken to God. Had George W. Bush claimed he spoken to the Devil, his story would have been credible. It is not far fetched to assume Bush is confused between God and the Devil.

The Gulf States without exception are governed by leaders and their family members not by any popular vote, but by power inheritance. Inheritance of power did not just stop at governing; wealth and resources theft became the principle motive to pass on governing power from one family member to the next. If these Gulf States did not have any oil, leaders would offer their government seats for a nickel. What Israel has done to the poor Palestinian people is not that much harsher than what Gulf States leaders have done to their own people. Palestinians have lost ownership to their statehood, while the Gulf States people retained their statehood but lost ownership of the States wealth and resources. The theft of Palestine and the theft of the Gulf States resources and wealth are similar in many ways. The regime of Israel is supported and protected by the big brother, United States; like wise, the Gulf States are under the same mafia protection. Palestinians are victims of the Zionist States grand theft; Arabs of the Gulf States are robbed by their own rulers.

If we can examine and judge problems from their source, we can arrive at a just solution. As long as we continue to play poker hands, we will never know the meaning of justice. Humans are born dishonest. The lucky ones mature into an elevation of morals and justice and remain decent all their lives; others become slaves for the Devil. We all walk around with bags of ideologies and ass trunk theories. We never once examine what is it like to be truly decent and truly compassionate. It is much easier for humans to deceive, cheat, kill and destroy. In many ways, we are wild animals living in very unpredictable time. It appears we did not progress one inch on acceptable behavior toward each other. We still in many ways believe tolerance is achieved best by how sharp a swords blade is.

The Middle East chaos did not start when Palestinians were expelled from their homeland; it started centuries before when Arab buried their civilization in the sand and decided to imitate other cultures. You imitate other cultures when youre rich and ignorant. A culture of a nation is realistically its soul and honor. You cannot buy it and sell it on an open market. You cannot brag about it being better than other cultures. A conceited nation is a nation without heritage or beginning. There are no chosen people on this planet. You get what you pay for. Good deeds pay back. Bad deeds develop bad odor. Aggression in mathematics does not give the same numeral results. For example, the recent invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq by United States does not result in the value of two downed. Both countries have lost more than 85% of their true values, thus giving the aggressors far less than they bargained and conspired for. If dreams and goals are supposed to be small or big steps forward, United States is not taking any steps at all. United States, in its present state of mind, is shooting itself in the foot and stabbing its people in the back by hiding the truth from them. Yes, the Middle East is going through the worse turmoil in its history, but it is still better off than what is happening in United States. This major power is unwinding like a ball of twine rolled down from a mountain top.

The Arab curse is oil and wealth. When a donkey becomes boss and the rider becomes the donkey, innocent people lose their livelihood and dignities to the point they dont want to live. The Middle East today is almost like a very large zoo guarded by U.S. soldiers and U.S. undercover agents. The U.S. front for democracy is nothing but an act. Reality is something different. True democracy in the Middle East will strip United States and Israel from every power string they presently have. A leash on the neck of an obedient dog guarantees the master longer rein on his objectives and dreams.

To change the dynamics of the Region, you do not need American democracies. The region needs its people to go on a peaceful march unlike the ones encouraged by United States and Europeans leaders. Lebanons recent march against the Syrian presence in Lebanon was orchestrated by United States, Israel and France with the help of Lebanese collaborators made up of leaders, intellectuals and average citizens. Lebanons march for democracy U.S. style was echoed by a very small minority that was enlarged by U.S. and Western TV screens to the point one head became twenty. Yet, Lebanese and other Arabs who prefer U.S. democracy, also prefer to go on sleep walking, even if destination was straight to Hell.

You cannot achieve justice and peace through killing, destruction and chaos. The outcome of wars has always resulted with a removal of one tyranny to only be replaced with another. Perfect examples are Afghanistan and Iraq; soon we will see another example in Lebanon after the election.

Western countries cannot seem to grasp the fact that there is no gain in wars. If the Middle East Region is the world economic pulse, then there is no reason to snip off this pulse and allow a population of Arab and Muslims of over 1.2 billions to bleed to death. Death to Islam and Arabia will undoubtedly end the human civilization.

The entire Middle East needs to return to Shariah Law. Europe and United States also need to revise their constitutions to ban aggressions, invasions and occupation of other countries. People from both sides of the oceans are victims. Some are victims for lack of justice and for being governed by a colored democracy; others are victims for lack of justice and for lack of democracy all together.

Theft goes on in Western countries, but only mandated by the legal period of the sitting government. Arguably, you can say theft continues by movements of robberies from one hand to the next. In the Middle East, specifically in the Gulf Region, theft of resources and wealth remains in the hands of the same family clans; and is passed on to the next generation still within the same clan. Western Government theft appears to have some level of distribution amongst different thieves in most cases.

Let us all go on the assumption all parties engaged in murder and killing were driven by ignorance and stupidity, not to mention fame and greed. Let us all acknowledge there are no winners in wars, but losers. The ruling clans in the Middle East must be kicked out by their people and deported to a no mans land. United States and its affiliates in crimes have no choice but to leave Afghanistan and Iraq without delay. Israel wont fulfill its expansion dream in real life or imaginary one. More than 7 million Palestinians wont rest until they return to the land of their fathers and ancestors.

This begs the real question. Can Palestine/Israel house all Palestinians and all Jews? The answer is yes! Will both people be able to live in peace and harmony after all the blood shed and wars? Again, the answer is yes! Arabs and Jews have lived in the region for thousands of years with normal disagreements and normal affections. Only when the Zionist theory surfaced and Arab leaders turned against their place of birth, hatred and animosity took their toll that resulted in wars and millions of casualties and injured on both sides.

Assalamu alaikum,

Thank you for posting this most interesting article, brother Mockba.

I have met quite a few Arabs over the past years.  They have all been, without exception, kind, friendly and generous beyond belief.  They have been, some, very religious, and others, not too religious, not unlike the average Muslim population.

But when it comes to politics, the title of Mr. Jabara's article describes them competely!  They know their home countries are run by despots, dictators and false kings.  They know there is rampant corruption, illegal activity, and incredible injustice to the masses.  Their attitude about the situation seems to be exactly like sleepwalking straight to hell.

When trying to engage in conversation about their homeland, most would describe a place they love, but could not live in.  And most would only shrug their shoulders at the situation and woefully mutter "masha'allah".

I think this attitude pervades much of the Muslim world and is not exclusive of the Arabs.  Look at how we sit by and watch injustices occuring all over the Muslim world and don't do anything about it.  Look at how the negative media about Islam and Muslims dominates television, newspapers and the net, and we don't speak up.  Look at how we spend more time arguing amongst ourselves than trying to help each other.

The majority of the Muslim world, not just Arabs, are guilty of shrugging our shoulders and muttering "masha'allah".  Seems many of us are sleepwalking straight to hell.

Peace, ummziba.

Bismillah,

The Taliban used Shari'ah law, and it succeeded in supressing and destroying many people.  That is a poetic, simplistic dream.  What about striving for something harder like developing a code of law using the Shari'ah law that is clearly Islaamic and fair to people?

I don't want to live in a place where I cannot go outside unless my husband gives permission!  No Way Jose!  At least the despots like Bush and King Abdullah don't get into the details of my life like that!  No, you have to offer a better trade of lifestyles if you want people to in reality support the movement.

And really, whose hands would be cut off for stealing?  A kid taking a candy at a store?  A guy stealing money from a corporation?  A mom stealing food for her kids?

And nobody implements the adultery laws correctly.  Women keep getting punished, but not the men.  It seems her pregnancy is enough proof of her guilt; what about him?

No, it's easy, really easy to say:  Let's return to the Shari'ah, but put yourself and your families into that situation, and there might be a lot of danger for you.  Despots will always be, whether it's in the guise of the Shari'ah or Kingships or Democracys.

Wa'alaikumu Salaam Ummziba,

As I was reading through "The Life of Muhammad" by Muhammad Husein Haykal couple of years back, and as i recall some of the chapters pertaining to pre-Islamic Arabia which he describes in much detail, i become more and more convinced that the entire world today is Arabian peninsular of those days. Today's nations of the world are yesterday's tribes of Arabia, mostly pagan, hostile to each other, materialistic and ignorant.

Handful of Muslims seeking refuge from the vulgarity of today's world is a flashback of the early Muslims scattered in the desert then, tortures inflicted upon innocent Muslims of today are the tortures brought on Bilaal (may Allah be pleased with him)... La ilaha illa Allaah is our message, is our life, and it infuriates the rejectors of God just like it did with the Quraish... angered by their worldy, self-installed and impotent idols they desecrate the Qur'aan not realizing that it is not the book that we worship unlike them...

Regardless of our color, race, customs and national belonging - we are all "Arabs" of those early days! And we shall come together, insha Allah.

Our objective now, is to strengthen our imaan (faith), establish habitual ihsaan (perfection), seek 'eelm (knowledge) and immediately reflect it in our 'alam (action). Meanings that are impossible to express in just one word...

Jazzak Allahu Khair for your comment. I thought that the article might be interesting.

Ma'a salaam.

Herjihad,

Firstly, lets admit that there is no country practicing Shari'ah today. As such all claims of it being unjust, barbaric, or horrific are made up without any valid case studies. If the Law is not established how can we question only the crime and punishment.

The Taliban never had a chance to establish Shariah Law. Shari'ah is clearly Islamic and not unfair to people, it just can't be otherwise.

And really, whose hands would be cut off for stealing?  A kid taking a candy at a store?  A guy stealing money from a corporation?  A mom stealing food for her kids?

Let's not oversimplify matters that need complex and expert approach. There are numerous evidences of theft cases that did not necessiate cutting of hands during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) what makes you so sure that a kid snatching a candy is to have his hand immediately cut with a chain saw before the eyes of his screaming classmates, splashing blood in their eyes. Take it easy and no drama, please. A candy taken lightly at an early age can result in something more serious like sinking teeth into national resources of another country and having innocent people's blood dripping of the jaw... one may not necesarily grow up to commit, but approving such act is a crime, too.

Quote And nobody implements the adultery laws correctly.  Women keep getting punished, but not the men.  It seems her pregnancy is enough proof of her guilt; what about him?

The very reason why the laws are not implemented correctly is because the Shari'ah has not been established. And anyone, provided that his beard is long enough, places himself in the position to hijack the responsibility and come up with a verdict. It is the very opposite of Shari'ah that has allowed instances of such behaviour. It is that "development of code law" to suit human cultural and other lusts that eventually results in such barbaric acts... but for the media and "progressive" minds it provides an excellent opportunity to turn tables and do "positioning" of the Shari'ah.

Your argument is not so much Shari'ah related, rather one of its many constituents, mainly criminal investigation. Establishment of Shari'ah would also mean establishment of all parts it is comprised of, including a qualified team of criminal investigators to study all available evidences. It is not chauvinistic butchery stuff... no, not that easy.

If people are against death for rape, strict measures against adultery and perversions, adequate answer to murder... there is nothing to refute suggestion that those people are thieves, adulterers, perverts and murderers... or their supporters, in the least.

Assalamu alaikum, brother Mockba,

Yes, that is wonderfully insightful to compare today's world with the Arabian penninsula of the Prophet's (pbuh) time.  Back then, a small handful of people led the world into Allah's light, through the leadership and example of Muhammad (pbuh).

Today, as you point out, "a handful of Muslims seeking refuge from the vulgarity of today's world", are being inflicted with numerous injustices.  I absolutely agree that those who live Islam do infuriate the rejectors of Allah, infuriates them to actions that are unjust and despicable.  The thought of Allah's justice on the Judgement Day is the only thing that makes their actions even bearable to me.

Can we realistically expect to help spread Islam and bring the ummah together, as those in the dawn of Islam did?  Even if we all do our very best to live our Islam as Allah meant it to be, can we still make a difference in today's world without a leader?

This is the part that frightens me.  All I see everywhere in the ummah is arguing, discord, and unfortunately, a people broken into their own "camps" of Islamic thought and ideas, each declaring that "theirs" is the correct way.

The concerns that Herjihad brings up about inconsistency of implementing shari'ah, certainly speaks to the problem of leadership.

Is it the return of the Messiah that we must wait for in order to finally bring the ummah together?  It is all so depressing, though important to think about and to try to act on.  I must go sit in my garden and ponder the exquisite creation of Allah.

Thank you, this conversation is most interesting!

Peace, ummziba.

Assalaamu alaikum

Agreed.. Nice conversation

Hows the exquisiteness of His creation getting along?

No doubt, perfect indeed! Insha Allah

Mokba The word chore springs to mind.

People engrossed in sinful pleasure, perceive religion as a bore. The Shariah I know, is also seen as a chore. However you know, it constitutes so much more! Been a slave to ones bondage, is the real lasting chore!

(ps can somebody please clear something up for me, is Wasalaam the male version of saying peace! upon leaving? & Masalaam the female?... confused! [not with my gender! tut tut!])

can't blame me for not trying! heee heee

just for You i will try to suffer gracefully!
