Imam Fights for his Life and Freedom: Donate Now!

Sheikh Ibrahim Dremali is a well-respected and accomplished imam who became seriously ill a few years ago. He has been in and out of hospitals, undergone intense chemotherapy and suffered the pains of difficult treatment as he struggles to regain his health.

Help Sheikh Dremali

When he refused to submit to noncompulsory interview requests from federal law enforcement agents (a right protected by the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution), agents returned to shove guns in his face and hauled him and his wife off to jail.

They are not charging him with terrorism. The agents dug and dug until they think they found an alleged omission in immigration forms the imam submitted over 20 years ago. That's why they shoved guns in his face?

He exercised his rights, and now they are trying to take away his freedom.

The importance of noble character
Imam Ghazali may have lived over 900 years ago, but in the true spirit of Islam his work, analysis and thoughts are as relevant today as they were when the scholar waited for his ink to dry on the paper he wrote on in the 11th century.

We may like to think of ourselves as continually evolving over hundreds of years as the world around us also transforms, but essentially, we are the same as our ancestors. We have similar hands and feet, eyes and ears, a heart, lungs, a mind and a soul.

Ghazali's analysis of people and society is based on the Qur'an, the hadith and Islamic history. His ability to break down complex information and ideas about our very nature make his books a powerful tool, which are breathtaking to read. People of all faiths have over the centuries talked about Ghazali's brilliance, but the impact can only be fully felt when his books are opened and his thoughts are shared.

On the basic subject of a person's character, he writes: "Goodness of character was the attribute of the master of messengers, and is the fruit of the pious and self-discipline of the people of constant worship. ...

What a Rabbi Learns from Muhammad
I first studied Islam when I was a student at UCLA almost 50 years ago, Then again while I was in Rabbinical school. Over the years I continued to read the Qur'an and other Islamic books. I read these books as the Prophet taught his followers in a Hadith "not as a believer, and not as a disbeliever". What does that mean? The Qur'an, of course, is sacred scripture for Muslims. A disciple of Muhammad named Abu Huraira relates, "The people of the Book used to read the Torah in Hebrew and then explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. Allah's Apostle said (to the Muslims). "Do not believe the people of the Book, nor disbelieve them, but say, 'We believe in Allah, and whatever is revealed to us, and whatever is revealed to you.' " Following Muhammad's teaching I too neither believe nor disbelieve in the Qur'an. If I believed in the Qur'an I would be a member of the Muslim Ummah (community). But I cannot disbelieve in the Qur'an because I believe that Muhammad is a prophet and I respect the Qur'an as a kindred revelation, to a kindred people, in a kindred language. In fact, the people, the language and the theology are closer to my own people, language and theology than that of any other on earth.

I would like to begin by sharing my understanding of several Ahadith that have taught me about my own religion.
