Great Mosque of Algiers
الجامع الكبير

Mosques Around the World

Located on the Rue de la Marine in Algeria's capital city, the Great Mosque of Algiers is a superb example of Almoravid architecture, one of the few remaining in North Africa. The Great Mosque of Algiers, also known as the El Jedid Mosque, was built in 1097 under the direction of Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf (1106-1142), an Almoravid ruler. In 1324 the Sultan of Tlemcen, Abu Tachfin added the minaret at the northwestern corner, and a gallery outside the mosque was added in 1840 when the French reconstructed the street.

The Great Mosque of Algiers is square in shape with a row of white marble columns joined by arches along the side facing the street. The interior of the mosque is a series of hallways, passages and rooms, with the common theme of pillars and archways throughout the building. Intricate mosaics adorn the floors and walls. The main building looks onto a courtyard, across from the galleries and prayer hall. The prayer hall is divided into 11 naves, each covered by a double sloping roof. The original mihrab - an arched niche indicating the direction of Mecca - was destroyed during a conflict in 1682 and the replacement mihrab has as its only decoration, two small spiral columns flanking it.

AHADITH:
(i) "Fast (Muslims) when you see the crescent; if it is obscure to you, then complete thirty
days in the count of Sha`ban. And break your fast when you see the crescent; if it is
obscure to you, then fast thirty days. " [Recorded by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others;
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah, `Aa'ishah, `Adiyy Bin Haatim, Huthayfah, Ibn `Abbaas, Ibn
`Umar, Jabir Bin `Abdillah, and other Sahaabah.]

HISTORY / Prophet's tradition
Islamic month and rituals are based on the Crescent (Sighting by naked eye or any
device?). This is in Islam and is a tradition in Islam and in the history of all Muslims (Salafs,
Khalafs and present).
(A) Prophet (s), His companions and all Muslims observed and continued the Islamic rituals
based on Crescent-sighting and made no changes even after (i) change of Qiblah in 2AH
(b) Conquest of Makkah in 7AH (iii) Hajj became obligatory in 9AH.
(B) After Prophet's death, 4 caliphs and companions lived for many years. The original
Sunnah/Hadiths of Moon-sighting and related rituals not changed even by Omar (ra).
(C)There is no Daleel/Evidence that indicates that Muslims in History (Prophets, Caliphs,
Imams, Scholars, Rulers etc.) tried to link or to determine Islamic months (Eid and Islamic
rituals) with astronomical calculations or Saudi Arabia announcements, declarations
(whatever it is) for all Muslims worldwide.

Opinions:
a) In the Tafseer of Al-Qurtabi, Ibn Nafi'e (ra) reported that Imam Malik bin Anas (ra) said:
"If you see an Imam who does not begin and end fasting by way of sighting, but begins
fasting by calculation, he should not be followed in prayer or emulated."

KHAN FROM US said:
Starting of an Islamic month without physical Crescent Sighting/ Crescent Sighting News
is UnIslamic (against Sunnah). Please give a Daleel from Quran, Sunnah, Ahaditt, Tabiun
and Tabey Tabiun or even any Fiqh of any Imam that says to start month before any
Crescent sighting news or start Islamic month without Crescent being sighted anywhere in
the world.

Based on the criteria for determining the beginning of Islamic Lunar months established
by the Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) and the European Council for Fatwa and
Research (ECFR==== ISLAMIC RITUALS , MONTHS MUST BE BASED ON THE QURAN AND
SUNNAH AND NOTHING ELSE... This is crystal clear in Sunnah and Ahadith and history of
Islam.

Please check ECFR (European Council of Fatwa Research(same FCNA) and KSA have
adopted to start the Islamic month based on first Crescent Sighting anywhere in the world
that is know as Ittehad ul Matalee. They do not follow the fabricated criteria of FCNA/ISNA.
Islam(Quran and Sunnah) is universal and has no boundaries and Muslim Ummah is ONE
and we must follow first crescent sighing anywhere in the world..
