Based on this criteria

According to the criteria adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America, and European Council for Fatwa and Research, [the conjunction before sunset and moon setting after sunset in Makkah] first day of Ramadan is on Monday, September 1, 2008.

The Astronomical New Moon for Shawwal is on Monday, September 29, 2008 at 8:12 GMT, 4:12 am EDT, 1:12 am PDT). According to the criteria adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America, and European Council for Fatwa and Research, the first day of Shawwal is on Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

A MUSLIM BROTHER FROM USA said:
assalamo alaykum

I think Islamicity is bias when they are saying Ramdan begin on September 1st, 2008 per calucations which neither approved by sharia nor make sense per science.

Islamicity ignoring people who follow Quran and Sunnah who started Ramdan as per moon sighting in USA and Canada on sept. 2nd, 2008. Islamicity does not represent all US muslims who are here from more than 100 countries.

Our muslim brothers from middle eastern countries they want to celebrate ramdan eid with their home countries they do not want follow Calucations nor sharia but they follow their middle eastern home countries for starting ramdan.

Remember last year Eid was on different days as per calculation in USA than in Middle East so many arab brothers followed SAUDI and not ISNA's calculation. So why Islamicity and ISNA want to divide the muslim community in USA. Only way to unite the muslims in USA and the world is to follow the Quran and Sunnah. please dont tell me that Calucations of ISNA is as per Quran and Sunnah. For the sake of unity follow the quran and sunnah and not misguided calculation which is disgracing for muslims in USA.

Please follow the sharia and Islamicity please also say that Ramdan also started on September 2nd , 2008 and dont be bias be just as allah will question on the day of judgement.

while inviting people to the truth you also be truthful as i do support this site from the bottom of my heart. Speak the truth.

Ramadan Mubarak to all brothers and sisters. Can't we all celebrate Ramadan and Eid on 1 day ? Can't the Maulvis Shed their egos and bring some respect to Islam. We always talk about how advance is Islam technologically and we make a mockery of ourselves when celebrating Eid or Ramadan.
I understand the Hadith concept about viewing moon with naked eye but I can't convince myself that this Hadith was written for creating controversies in muslims.
May Allah forgive me if I have said anything wrong here but it is hard to digest muslims celebrating eid on different days in the same subdivision based on the local masjid they attend.

to all the brothers who hate saudis and play this game of re-interpretating the words of Allah the way they make themselves right in their missguidance.

I warn you and myself, quit playing with Islam? the sighting of Ramadan must depend of the land of the Prophet Makkah. in time of the Prophet, people were watching Ramadan when they are far from reaching the information of what's going on in Makkah. today, with the technology we live in, you need few minutes to know what's going on in Makkah.

the brothers and sisters in America, does not pay attention to this fact and they follow some so called imams who got a real problem of hating the saudis.

brothers and sisters in Islam, just fear Allah Subhanah wa ta'aala? don't keep bringing excuses who has nothing to do with the fact:

if you reach to know that the moon is seen in saudia, you have to abid with it.

may Allah guides you. I'm not a saudi and whatever my opinion can be about the kingdom of saudia, it will never affect the fact:

to fast when my brothers and sisters see the moon in saudia.

even when you claim to not fast according to your brothers and sisters sighting in Saudia, it is like you witness they are a liars or deceivers.

if you do that, you will be asked in the hereafter to prove that in the front of Allah.

I did a big study about moon sighting and I discovered many brothers and sisters in AMERICA refuse to follow the sighting in Saudia just some among them hate that country or it's leaders.

Fear Allah, fear Allah,...fear Allah. just do not fear people around you? the right is clear, you don't need cover the sun with your hands to claim: it's night time.

Ramadan Mubarak and may Allah clean your hearts from anything evil.

I opine (like any other "truth-seeking" brother/sister would)that we can never be united until we stick to the teachings of the Qur'an. Thus if it states clearly in the HOLY BOOK OF ALLAH, that we need to sight the moon before we fast/break, then, why can't we shun our worldly desires and JUST stick to that? PERIOD!!!

There is no reason to fight about it, really. Good points are on all sides. There is a hadith that talks about fasting upon sighting and there is a hadith about a people fasting in one area,Yemen(?), and after relating that they were fasting to people of another area, they began to fast as well(even though they had not sighted). May Allah forgive me for not knowing the exact number hadith to give you. But please, search for yourself, and you will find that it seems to be ok if we don't start exactly at the same time. I guess people don't like the uncertainty of it. Come on, lighten up, there is too much beauty in the entire event to be bogged down with fighting! This is absolutely the happiest event for us. Its a chance for renewal, refreshment, forgiveness, repentance, reflection, etc. I can't wait for it to begin and am sad when its over!!! Ramadan Mubarak!!

TAMSIR FROM US(GAMBIAN) said:
Assamu Alaikum Brothers, let us show Sabr in our Deen. Islam is not about arguments and playing smart on mere vanity. Islam is deep showing of spiritual piety and fear of the Almighty Allah and to be co-operative and unite as one Muslim Ummah. It is only this mere divisions that and trivility that let our enemies exploit us. Allah say " Hold fast to the rope and do not split away" Qur'an:(chap3:106).
If we can standardadised moonsighting I think it is okay, but people should be more in consultant to their local mosque for that matter. Hence, in Islam, we are not responding to a cleargy, we can only rely on information emanating from our local mosques; and if the matter is to be resolve we muslims should be ready to set a COUNCIL OF WORLD MOSQUE ( PURPOSELY TO MONITOR MOON SIGHTING) and if this is done, then the matter could be reslove without disagreement. Hence, due to different time zones and cosmic phenomena from around the globe, moonsighing for beginning of Ramadan could sometimes varies, depending from which part of the world we live in. But I think if we Muslims set up a Global council purposely for this reason, we could quickly be more unifying in our beginning and ending of the month of Ramadan. The Global council then would communicate unaminously with all Muslim member countries around the globe and standardise the date of the beginning of the fast based on informations garthered from all Muslim Communities. The council would be responsible to inform each and every region of the world, through their main mosques and the information they all shared about the MOON SIGHTING, to reach a date based on that information. This may be complex , but if we work together, even if the day for the fast differs, it would be the responsibility of the suggested World Mosque council with the understanding based on time zones and reliable data informations. If we work together we can share information. It is just a matter of second now in this internetERA.SALAM.TAMSI

I am writing this in responce to the brother Dr Deriss, With all respect, the Quran Clearly indicates that we fast when we see the moon and that Iftar is also according to the moon, there isn't a single statement in the entire Quran, Sunna, or Islamic literature that said that muslims should follow saudia or any spcific person !!!!!.......

This is part of God greater wisdon, I trust you understand that time is not synchrounous everywhere, there are countries were Sun rise in Saudia is the sunset for them, how can these people follow Saudia, instead The god with his knowledge that surpassed human knowledge has chosen a way that every body can trust at any time to time ramadan. Also If Allah wanted every body in the whole world to start fasting at the same time he would have directed us to use a Sun based calednder like the western calender to be able to pinpoint the time of ramadan.

It is time to unite. We should not hate anyone whether they are Saudis or Indo-Paks.Pak. We have to follow the right thing(Fard/Sunnah)in Islam about our moonsighting/Islamic Calender.

Prophet never said whatever saudis do follow them. Saudis are not superior to anyone period.

Please do not compare saudi to other countries as there is 8-10 hour difference between USA and Saudi. Set your calender and clocks to saudi and follow if that makes sense.

We should hold a conference of all Islamic Scholars around the world and pass the ruling about this Islamic/lunar calender issue once and all. We then unite and follow.

bismillahir rahmanir raheem.

Locally we will be watching for the crescent on Sunday evening. If it is sighted then we will celebrate the first day of fasting on Monday, if it is not sighted then we will begin the first day on Tuesday.

This has nothing to do with Saudis or Fatwahs. This is about what Allah (swt) tells us in the Qur'an, and it is about the Sunnah of Rasul Allah (saw).

Peace to all and Ramadhan Mubarak! May Allah accept your fast.

Assalamu alayku,
I agree with following Saudi. If the moon is seen thare that means the day has begun; when that day gets here then how can it not be ramadhan here, even if we see the moon or not in the States; its just common sence. But some of these modern Muslims like to innovate in the deen as they see better for their hall rentals and so on.

Ramadan will begin when Saudia will begin Ramadan here in USA. the associations who hate the saudis can do whatever they like. Islam is not about hating anybody, it is about what is right.

if that was phones in time of the prophet, I don't think someone will begin fasting after the day when the Messenger of Allah begin.

there is only 2 reasons to not fast following saudia:

or you call the saudis not believers.

or you hate the saudis and you use your hate to change the laws of Islam.

Ramadan will begin with saudia and end with it. any association who want do something else, can speak for themselves. they don't represent us the moslems in USA.

wa salam alaikom.

I believe the Fatwa adopted by the Islamic counsel is WRONG. If the New moon is on Saturday August 30, then it's obvious that Ramadan is on the 31 August. The same argument goes for the Month of Shaaban. If 29 Sept is last day of Ramadan, how can you swallow two days to announce the beginining of Shaaban. There is no need to follow Saudi Arabia, just let wisdom guide you, and use mind in making decisions in bahalf of the Muslims. Allah will ask you about these improper Fatwa's that you are making in the name of Islam, and true Islam has nothing to do with it.

Let Allah be the decision amker, not someone who calls himself an Imam, and knows nothing about Islam.
