National Day of Prayer and Remembrance

(September 14, 2001)

(Imam, The Islamic Society of North America)

الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلاة والسلام على جميع الأنبياء والمرسلين

In the Name of God, most gracious, most merciful.

Lord, you said and your words are true:

If any do seek for glory and power, to God belong all glory and power. To Him mount up all words of purity. He exalts all righteous deeds. But those that lay the plots of evil, for them is a terrible penalty; and the plotting of such shall not abide. (The Qur'an, Fatir 35:10)

Goodness and evil are not equal. Repel the evil with the good. Then will he between whom and you was hatred become as it were your friend and intimate. But no one will be granted such goodness except those who exercise patience and restraint, none but persons of the greatest good fortune. (The Qur'an, Fussilat 41: 34-35)

We turn to you, our Lord, at this time of pain and grief in our nation. We witness the evil of destruction and the suffering of the many of our people before our eyes. With broken and humble hearts and with tears in our eyes, we turn to You, our Lord, to give us comfort. Help in our distress, keep us together as people of diverse faiths, colors and races, keep our country strong for the sake of good and righteousness, and protect us from all evil. Ameen.

It was so long ago, this prayer service, but I have it on my "favorites." I thank you for the words that teach my heart, that it is possible to repel evil with good, and that patience and restraint will help make peace between those who have had hatred between them. I pray that this become more true throughout the world. Peace to all.

the muslim community of this country supports you all in your grief. May allah swt ease your burden and the burden imposed upon the entire ummah-as the almighty promises that after every calamity comes the relief.alhamdolillah- the verses fromn the holy Quran selected for this occassion were not only specific but most appropriate .uderstandably at first there was an intense shock and disbelief.this in turn was followed by intense anger the relentless pursuit for vengeance and revenge.and revenge at what cost.If the powers that be, seek to decimate the perpetrators of this atrocity and in the process mow and hew any innocent victim in its path then what is the difference between these so called "civilsed" people and the barbarians who hijacked and perverted the tenets of Islam? Glory to Allah swt Never in history has there been such a hue and cry by the enemies of Islam to put Islam under the miroscope that the more they focus the sharper becomes this picture that Islam means Peace. And from all adversities come the opportunity. The harder the enemies of Islam try to discredit the religion the more apparent becomes the serenity of this universal message..May allah swt bless the American muslims for your outstanding effots as rolet models of Islam.I could not help but break down with the speech of condolence expressed by sister Mutamma Marwani May Allahswt bless her .our prayers are with her for a successful outcome in her forthcomning motherhood. Now that the dust is settling let us pray and hope that wisdom prevails and the power brokers realisethat only with kindness and understanding will they be able to eradicate the evil and hatred. We all need to change . FOR IF WE DONT CHANGE WE WILL REMAIN THE SAME. May Allah swt be with you Salaams Mahmood khan. Allah hafiz.
